Storyline: Kochi has lost yet another battle with Kozhikode, the decapitated head of their commander is send to the palace to humiliate them. Forming an alliance, Kochi Rajavu signs a treaty with the Portuguese, which allows them to institute Cartaz system in Kochi Port in return for firepower to reinforce Kochi’s armed forces. This disrupts the maritime trade of local Muslim merchants, who now have to remit heavy duty to Portuguese customs, leaving them little to no profit. They seek the help of Kuttiyali Marakkar, an influential merchant. His request is turned down by the Raja. Kuttiyali devises a plan to bypass the Portuguese and transport goods to Arab ships waiting off the port, but his brother-in-law Moidu double-cross him and leaks this plan to Portuguese commander Alfonso de Noronho.
In the past, Kuttiyali and his sons Kutti Poker Ali and Pattu Marakkar had together served as the naval commanders of Kozhikode Samoothiri against the Portuguese Armadas. After the death of Poker Ali, they amicably resigned from service and settled in Kochi as merchants. In the present, Marakkar family is preparing for the wedding of Muhammad Ali, Poker Ali’s son. Their procession carrying bride and groom camps at nightfall. Noronho pulls a coup de main and massacre everyone, including Kuttiyali, Muhammad’s mother and bride, while Muhammad and Pattu survives. Raja declares them outlaws after Moidu’s story that Kuttiyali’s men triggered the fight over dowry that lead to the tragedy. Muhammad and Pattu assassinate Moidu and flee the place. Their raft is destroyed in sea storm and gets stranded in Ponnani, Kozhikode.
